Fall 2002 Course Math 491, Section C801, 1 credit hour "Seminar on Competitive Problem Solving" Wednesday, 4:15P-5:30P, LD265 Instructor: Paul Bleher This fall we will focus on combinatorics and elementary probability theory. I will use the first chapters of the classical Princeton textbook by William Feller "An Introduction to Probability Theory and Its Applications. Vol. I", 3rd ed., John Wiley & Sons, New York e.a., 1968. The book contains many nice problems and I will give them as homework assignments. Still there will be no prerequisites for the course, all notions and basic results will be explained. We will discuss solutions to many problems. The course is oriented on bright high school students and undergraduates. In the end of the semester we will also practice in solving problems from USA Mathematical Olympiads, International Mathematical Olympiads and other major mathematical contests. I plan two tests during the semester, midterm and final. The grade for the course will be based on results of the tests and homework assignments. |
