IUPUI Mathematical Sciences High School Math Contest

The IUPUI Department of Mathematical Sciences annually sponsors a High School Mathematics Contest. The purpose of the contest is to increase math awareness among high school students, to foster a connection between local high schools and the IUPUI community, and to provide an outlet through which outstanding math and science students are recognized for their academic achievements.

Description

Every year in late February or early March, the five contest questions and a poster highlighting the contest theme are mailed to all eligible high schools and posted on this website. Students work on the questions independently and mail their solutions in mid-April. Professors from the Math Department judge all entries based on the student's method of finding the solution, correctness, and elegance of solution. The questions are chosen so that all high school students - from freshmen through seniors - are able to utilize their math problem-solving skills. Every year, one question consists of an essay about an application of mathematics as it relates to the contest theme.
