Academic Programs
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
Mathematics is one of the oldest and most fundamental sciences.
Mathematicians use mathematical theory, computational techniques,
algorithms, and the latest computer technology to solve economic,
scientific, engineering, physical, and business problems. The IUPUI
undergraduate mathematics program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in
Mathematics from Purdue University, with a concentration in pure
mathematics, applied mathematics, actuarial science, or secondary education.

Master of Science in Mathematics
Earning a master's degree in mathematics will qualify a student for a broad
range of highly paid positions in industry, business, government, and
education. Banks, insurance companies, oil companies and companies in the
computer and communication industries employ many mathematicians, as do
almost every bureau and branch of the federal government. IUPUI's graduate
program in mathematics features an active academic community with prominent
researchers in several areas of mathematics and statistics, and a low
student/faculty ratio. The program leads to a Master of Science degree in
Mathematics from Purdue University, with a concentration in pure
mathematics, applied mathematics, applied statistics, or mathematics
education.

Doctor of Philosophy
IUPUI offers both a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from Purdue
University, and in collaboration with the IU School of Medicine, a Doctor of
Philosophy in Biostatistics from Indiana University. IUPUI's unique
location in the center of Indiana's vibrant life sciences research community
provides exciting opportunities to engage in biostatistical research in a
variety of areas. Within the mathematics program, current research strengths
of the department include integrable systems, mathematical physics, dynamical
systems, noncommutative geometry, operator algebras, differential geometry, partial
differential equations, functional analysis, biomathematics, computational neurosciences, and scientific computing.

Minor in Mathematics
An undergraduate minor in mathematics can be useful in many fields
of study, such as computer science, engineering, natural and social
sciences, and business and economics. A scientist or engineer may
need knowledge of differential equations and linear algebra, while a
person studying business or a social science may need a background in
probability or statistics.
