Master of Science in Mathematics
Pure Mathematics
The graduate curriculum seeks to develop a broad and balanced perspective in the mathematical sciences, covering both the traditional areas of pure mathematics and the many interdisciplinary fields in applied mathematics. Students are encouraged to develop a deep understanding in any chosen area of pure mathematics to enable them to pursue a career in either academic or non-academic settings. The M.S. degree requires two years of graduate study by full-time students and up to four years by part-time students. A minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework (that is, at least 10 courses) is required for the degree. Students not seeking a degree, but desiring to take graduate courses in mathematics for personal/professional development, may receive approval to take courses in this program under graduate non-degree student classification.
Admission Requirements
Applications are invited from qualified students with at least a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution in mathematics, or in the physical sciences or engineering with a strong mathematics background. The minimal mathematics background includes at least 13 credit hours of mathematics courses past the calculus sequence (single and multivariate calculus and differential equations).
Pure Mathematics Course Requirements
For a student who wishes to continue toward a Ph.D. degree thereafter, the plan of study must include:
| Complex Analysis | MATH 53000 |
| Real Analysis & Measure Theory | MATH 54400 |
| Principles of Analysis II | MATH 54500 |
| Abstract Algebra | MATH 55300 |
| Linear Algebra | MATH 55400 |
| Topology | MATH 57100 |
The remaining four courses are electives and should be chosen with the approval of the student's advisor. One elective must be a course for which one of the above courses is a prerequisite.
For a student who does not wish to continue toward a Ph.D. degree thereafter, the plan of study must also include:
| Probability | STAT 51900 |
| Geometry | MATH 56200 |
The remaining two courses are electives and should be chosen with the approval of the student's advisor.
General Requirements and Policies
Consult the Purdue Graduate Student Handbook for additional requirements, policies, and resources.
