Graduate Program Overview
Graduate Program Overview

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers programs leading to Purdue University M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in pure and applied mathematics. Master's degree options include areas of concentration in Pure or Applied Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Applied Statistics.

The M.S. degree requires 30 hours of coursework. The Applied Statistics program requires a comprehensive written and oral exam. The other M.S. programs require no written or oral exams, and a thesis is not required. Typically, completion of the M.S. degree requires two years of full-time study and up to four years of part-time study.

Among the requirements for the Ph.D. are a minimum of 42 hours of graduate work, reading knowledge in one foreign language, passing four written qualifying exams and an oral specialty exam, writing a thesis, and passing a final oral examination based on the thesis. The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of four years, and a typical student will spend five to six years in the program.

Financial Support

The Department typically supports all full-time Ph.D. students and a limited number of qualified M.S. students. Beginning graduate students who wish to be considered for financial support should supply all application materials by February 1 for fellowships and March 1 for assistantships. Available types of financial support include university fellowships, graduate teaching assistantships, and research assistantships. Fellowships and assistantships carry stipends up to $22,100 for 12 months, plus tuition waivers and health insurance.
