Purdue University Ph.D. Program in Mathematics
The Department offers a program leading to a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Purdue University. All requirements for the degree are completed on the IUPUI campus. The IUPUI Math Department is a vibrant academic community with prominent researchers in several areas of mathematics and statistics, providing an excellent environment for collaborative and interdisciplinary study. Current research strengths within the department include integrable systems, mathematical physics, dynamical systems, noncommutative geometry, operator algebras, differential geometry, partial differential equations, functional analysis, statistics and probability, applied mathematics, biomathematics, computational neurosciences, and scientific computing. With a low student-faculty ratio, the program offers students many opportunities for close interactions with faculty and careful research guidance.

Among the requirements for the Ph.D. are a minimum of 42 hours of graduate work, reading knowledge in one foreign language, passing four written qualifying exams and an oral specialty exam, writing a dissertation, and passing a final oral examination based on the dissertation. The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of four years, and a typical student will spend five to six years in the program. A total of 90 credit hours is required.

The Department typically supports all full-time Ph.D. students. Beginning graduate students who wish to be considered for financial support should supply all application materials by February 1 for fellowships and March 1 for assistantships. Available types of financial support include university fellowships, graduate teaching assistantships, and research assistantships. Fellowships and assistantships carry stipends up to $22,100 for 12 months, plus tuition waivers and health insurance.
