The Programs
The graduate curriculum seeks to develop a broad
and balanced perspective in the mathematical sciences,
covering both the traditional areas of pure mathematics and the
many interdisciplinary fields in applied mathematics. Students
are encouraged to develop a deep understanding in any chosen area
of pure of applied mathematics to enable them to pursue a career
in either academic or non-academic settings.
The M.S. degree requires two years of graduate study
by full-time students and up to four years by part-time
students. Students may choose to pursue a master of science with
specialization in pure mathematics or applied mathematics. A minimum
of 30 credit hours of coursework (that is , at least 10 courses)
is required for the degree.
Admissions
Applications are invited from qualified student with at
least a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or in the physical sciences
or in engineering with a strong mathematics background (at least
13 credit hours of mathematics courses past the calculus sequence).
GRE scores are recommended. TOEFL is required for foreign students
with the minimum score of 570.
Degree Requirements
A plan of study must be submitted and approved by the department
and the Graduate School before the semester in which the student
expects to receive the degree. It is desirable that the plan of
study be submitted by the end of the second semester of graduate
study. A plan of study will not be accepted if it contains courses
with a large overlap in content. Subsequent requests for changes
in the plan of study must be made with the appropriate form and
approved by the advisor, the Director of Graduate Programs, and
the Purdue University Graduate School.
The student who plans to continue toward a Ph.D. degree after
completion of an M.S. degree should consider the courses on which
the qualifying examinations are based before preparing the plan
of study for the M.S. degree. Substitutions in course requirements
and the transfer of credits from other universities may be permitted
with the approval of the Graduate Committee.
A minimum of 30 hours of course credit is required for the regular
M.S. degree. The average time for completion of this degree is
two years.
Pure Mathematics Requirements
For a student who wishes to continue toward a Ph.D. degree
thereafter, the plan of study should include:
