Registration

Before registering for classes, students should consult either the Director of Graduate Programs or their advisors to discuss the selection of courses to take during the semester. Please note that some classes may require authorization, therefore students should see their advisors before registration.

After that students should register online using
OneStart. The IUPUI Schedule of Classes is only available online at IUPUI Registrar. Please refer to this website for all the details about registration, procedures, fees, dates, etc.

Each semester, all full-time mathematics graduate students in the department are required to register for MATH 598, Graduate Student Seminar.

Grading System and GPA

Grades in the graduate program are assigned in a number of ways. Although grades A, B, C, D, and F are all available (including a + or - option), in a graduate course any grade below C is considered unsatisfactory. Moreover, students may be required to repeat a course with a grade of B-, especially if it is in their major area.

The grade point average is calculated from numerical values, with A=4 and F=0. A plus option raises the numerical value by .3, and a minus option decreases the value by .3. Thus a B+ is worth 3.3 grade points, while B- is worth 2.7 grade points. Although an A+ may be used, its value is still 4.0. All grades for which numerical grade points can be assigned are used to calculate your GPA. IUPUI uses + and - to calculate a GPA for determination of stipends. However, the final GPA is calculated without + and - because Purdue University does not assign + and - grades.

The grades S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory) may be assigned in certain courses. They carry no grade point values and are not used to calculate the GPA. Another grade is the deferred grade, R. This is similar to an incomplete grade (I); but unlike an I grade, the R grade never reverts to an F. Usually the deferred grade is used to postpone a grade.

Student Residency

The total number of hours of academic credit used to satisfy residency requirements consists of all course credit hours that appear on the plan of study, other graduate course credit hours with grades of C or better that appear on the transcript, and research credit hours with grades of S that appear on the transcript. In fulfilling these requirements, a maximum of 15 credit hours will be allowed from any one semester (maximum hours proportional to length of summer session).

Master's Degree
  1. At least one-half of the total credit hours used to satisfy degree requirements must be earned in residence at IUPUI.
  2. At least 30 total credit hours are required.
  3. All course grades must be A or B with at most two grades of C. S (satisfactory) grades are not accepted, with the exception of research hours.
Doctoral Degree
  1. At least one-third of the total credit hours used to satisfy degree requirements must be earned (while registered for doctoral study) in continuous residence at IUPUI.
  2. At least 90 credit hours are required.
  3. A master's degree from any accredited university is considered to contribute 30 credit hours toward satisfying this residency requirement.
Advising and Supervision

Each entering graduate student will be assigned a major professor (advisor) to assist in the selection of a graduate program and to give guidance in the program. The list of course offerings should be consulted in planning a program since several courses are offered only once a year or less frequently.

Students in a master's program will be assigned an advisory committee consisting of the major professor and at least two other members of the faculty whom they have had for class.

Students in a Ph.D. program who have passed the advanced topics examination will arrange for a new advisory committee of three or four faculty members (will be discussed later) representative of the student's major area of interest. The chair will be the student's thesis advisor.

Plan of Study

Each graduate student must file a plan of study with the Purdue Graduate School. The Plan of Study form (Form 4 for Ph.D., Form 6 for master's) is available through the IUPUI math office. The form must be typed and signed by all the members of the advisory committee and the Director of Graduate Programs.

A plan of study for the master's degree should be filed as early as is feasible in the student's study. It must be filed with the Purdue Graduate School one month prior to the first day of the academic session of graduation, and students not meeting this deadline may be asked to register for "Degree Only" for the following session to receive the degree.

The plan of study will not be approved until all technical conditions have been met, and normally all unsatisfied academic conditions of admission must have been met. Warning: For our graduate students at IUPUI, it always occurs in every semester that students do not meet all the conditions of admission when they are about to graduate. (The conditions are listed on the acceptance letter from the Dean of the Purdue Graduate School, when students are accepted to the graduate program.) Students must take care of these conditions as early as possible to avoid these problems near graduation.

Course changes to the plan of study may be requested on the Request for Change to the Plan of Study form (Form 13). Each change of plan of study must be accompanied by a brief rationale. Poor performance in a course is not an appropriate reason for removing a course from the plan of study. A request for changes of a plan of study must be signed by the student and approved by the major professor and the Director of Graduate Programs.

Academic Probation

Since an overall GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 is required by the department for graduation, a student is automatically considered as probationary if at any time the cumulative index falls below 3.0. Two semesters of work under the 3.0 index will generally result in the loss of financial aid such as fellowships, teaching and research assistantships.

Moreover, after two semesters of work under a 3.0 index, students will not be permitted to register for further classes without permission from the Department Chair in consultation with Director of the Graduate Programs.

Candidacy

All degree candidates must register for candidacy CAND 991 during the session of graduation. Students must also be registered for at least one course in the session of graduation. Those with outstanding incomplete grades for courses listed on the plan of study will not be permitted to graduate.

Ph.D. candidates must submit the form 380-Request to Have Degree Awarded at Another Campus-to the IUPUI Office of the Registrar prior to the end of the sixth week of the semester in which the degrees is to be conferred (third week for a summer session). The form has to be signed by Dean Pam Crowell before submission to the registrar's office. Students must file this form during any semester in which they will graduate, even if students had filed it in previous semesters.
