Overview of the Program
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at IUPUI offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.)
degree in Mathematics from Purdue University, with a concentration in Applied
Mathematics.
General requirements include courses in English composition and communication skills,
foreign language, humanities, social sciences, comparative world cultures, physical
and biological sciences, and computer science. The department also requires
students to choose a secondary area of concentration outside of the department.
The secondary area of concentration consists of at least 18 credit hours and
includes at least 3 courses beyond the introductory level.
All undergraduate math majors complete three semesters of calculus (Math 163,
164 and 261), differential equations (Math 262), and linear algebra (Math 351
or 511). Additional math requirements for the applied math option include MATH
414, 426 or 417, 444, and 510, plus 12 credits of approved electives.
Students in the applied mathematics option complete 45 credit hours of mathematics,
plus a 2 credit hour Capstone Experience. A total of 124 credit hours is required
to complete the degree.

Career Options
Students with training in applied mathematics are employed in a wide variety of
position in business, industry, and government. This option is also good
preparation for graduate study in fields closely related to mathematics such as
computer science, statistics, and engineering.
